NYC Community Schools leverage a growing body of evidence showing that an integrated focus on academics, health and mental health services, youth development, expanded learning opportunities, and family supports are critical to improving student success. The City is investing in the Community School strategy through the NYC Department of Education and through inter-agency collaboration and coordination. One example of inter-agency collaboration is the partnership with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), where the DOE expanded its free screening program to test the vision of all 55,000 students, K-12, in Community Schools. Since Spring 2015, 130 Community Schools have contracted with 46 lead CBO partners, and over the next two years more schools will be added to the network of schools supported by the Office of Community Schools.
